First seen in the 2000 Japanese film of the same name, Battle Royale is a format that seems made for video games. It’s been emulated via mods such as Minecraft’s popular Hunger Games plugin and ARMA III has a dedicated game mode, but surprisingly there hasn’t been an entire game based around the idea until now.
Meet The Culling. Developed by Xaviant Games, the guys behind Lichdom: Battlemage, the player is plunged into an arena with 15 others with one goal: survive. Crafting is a huge focus at the start of games, with the materials for things like knives, bows and bandages – branches and rocks, obviously – littering the ground you walk on.
The Culling is essentially a race, albeit an unconventional one. How quickly can you gather enough items to be a force to be reckoned with? Exploring and looting buildings, making sure to stay hidden from other players is one option, whilst your other is to hunt down other players from the get go, stealing their hard earned loot and making a name for yourself with the most kills at the top of the leaderboard.
