VGU Talks – Why Fallout Is So Loveable
Fallout 4 is fastly approaching us and whether you have pre-ordered or waiting to see initial reviews, you cannot resist the temptation to get hype over this game from an amazing franchise.
Since playing the original Fallout on the PC years ago, I was instantly enthralled. This idea of a wasteland with vaults scattered all over it with different people, experiments and ideals just seems so expansive. You can never guess what story your going to stumble on next when you go into a random location in this world. But the two most loveable things about the series for me are the narrative and the gameplay.
The story has always left you second guessing as to what the true objective of your game will become. An initial search for your father in Fallout 3 ended up becoming a struggle to purify the waters of the wasteland all whilst the Enclave were hunting you down. A water chip goes haywire and needs replacing, but if you do complete this task you must now deal with the larger threat of the super mutants populating California. These very small and yet so huge decisions when it comes to the narrative designs makes the games so much more immersive and memorable. All have their own unique traits, villains, locations and more which just puts the cherry on top of the cake.
As for gameplay, it has only evolved since day one. The turn based AP system of the original games made you constantly stay on your toes and worry about each small decision you make, kind of like XCOM. But as this carried over to FPS, the fundamentals stayed but added a new sense of dread. Now you have all these beasts, bandits and badasses face to face with you as you either converse, bargain or eliminate them. A simple change of perspective as well as some altercations to the gameplay has now made the series more credible than ever before.
But this is simply what I love about Fallout, what about you? Is there anything you love about the series or can you not stand the franchise at all? Let us know your thoughts on the games in the comments below.
