VGU Talks: The Plot of Kingdom Hearts III
Kingdom Hearts, the series that has taken a generation of gamers by storm. Combining Final Fantasy and Disney together has made a collection of games that have now lead us up to the release of Kingdom Hearts III. But since we are unsure as to when the game will be in our hands, we can only think about the possible plot. With that in mind, here is my idea about what we could see from KH3.
Spoiler Alert! In this I will be bringing up spoilers from the series. If you have not played the games I suggest you do, or at least read up on the story, before continuing.
My idea for the storyline of the game is split into three different segments. So let us go through them one by one.
Act 1: The Warriors of Light
The first important part of the game that should be addressed is the joining of the seven lights. These characters are going to be the ones to rise up and defend the galaxy against the thirteen darkness’s lead by Xehanort, as established in Dream Drop Distance. The seven lights as we know are going to be Sora, Rikku, Kairi, Ventus, Terra, Aqua and King Mickey.
Now for the interesting part, how will Ventus and the others from Birth By Sleep be saved and by who? My theory has it so that Sora saves Ventus, Kairi saves Aqua and Riku saves Terra. Let me explain why. Sora would travel back to Castle Oblivion in search for the secret chamber that holds Ventus’ heartless shell. As part of him is inside Sora, the young protagonist from the main KH games has to be present on his recovery. Saying this however, Ventus should not be saved first but last. This is because it is going to take the combined powers of all the warriors of light to bring Ven back from the darkness inside of him.
As for Aqua, Kairi joining Sora in her recovery would make sense. Both of them share a lot of similarities, including being the only female protagonists on the main team. They are both like the mother figures of the main characters, keeping them in check when they need to focus on the job at hand. By having Kairi present during Aqua’s recovery, the two can recollect when they first met and possibly have a laugh about how ‘useless’ the boys can be at times. This would end up becoming both a funny and heartfelt moment at the start of the game.
Finally we have Terra, the other character that has used the darkness as a weapon to become stronger. Him and Riku share a lot of experiences together, the most important being that they have both succumbed to the darkness in some way. Terra combining together with Xehanorts heart to create Terranort and Riku joining with Ansem, Xehanort’s heartless, to gain more power. As Riku however has channeled his darkness into his abilities as can be seen in Kingdom Hearts II and Dream Drop Distance, Terra was never able to truly channel all of the power he had. Hence why he was so easily overtaken by Xehanort’s heart. With this however, Riku can help Terra see the light and teach him to control his inner dark. This in turn can make Terra the strongest character out of our entire team, especially with Ven and Aqua by his side.
But with the team together at last and their goal set, what happens next?
Act 2: The Protection of the Worlds
With everyone together now it would make sense to head out to the neighbouring worlds, some old and some new, to defend them from heartless and possibly the return of nobodies and the unversed. This will involve the characters going to certain worlds or just joining Sora for the ride, alluding to the possibility of four party members like in Final Fantasy XV rather than three.
Throughout these moments of the game, the characters will learn new skills and gain the ultimate power that they need ready for the final battle. This will also help to introduce the other members of the thirteen darkness’s and answer questions about their individual traits and goals on these worlds. Possibly showing off that its not just Xehanort and former members of Organisation XIII joining the ranks. Could Jafar, Oogie Boogie and Ursula make a comeback?
Lastly throughout this act of the story, Xehanort will gain everything he needs to open up Kingdom Hearts and start the forging of the ultimate Keyblade. Leading our heroes to the final act of the tale.
Act 3: The 2nd Keyblade War
Seven lights, thirteen darkness’s and a battlefield filled with the remnants of the first war. This will be the stage for our epic climax, bringing everyone together and also showing some interesting confrontations. Including Axel, who gains a Keyblade at the end of Dream Drop Distance, going toe to toe with Saix aka Isa.
This could lead into some interesting gameplay as players could jump from one character to the next systematically taking down the dark antagonists one by one. Even having an interesting duel with Kairi possible going up against the return of Xion from 358/2 days. These battles will increase in difficulty and possibly feature multiple stages. As for who the characters will fight, I am leaving that in the air right now. There are certain characters that would work well against one another in this environment, but overall any confrontation would do the trick. Even if you had to systematically switch from one character to the next mid fight.
Regardless of how the individual battles go, the final battle will be against something we have never seen before. The ultimate being of darkness created by the reforging of the ultimate Keybalde and the dark intentions of Xehanort. Would it take the form of a beast or be a combination of what Ansem’s and Xemnas’ final forms were in previous games? Sadly I wouldn’t know, but there is a lot of room for the developers to work with.
This is all I have for the plot of Kingdom Hearts III. None of this is confirmed and literally just off the top of my head, so take it with a pinch of salt. Whether these events take place or not is up for anyone’s guess, but one thing is for certain. As we get closer to the release of KH III, questions will be answered and the truth will be revealed.
