TCG Tuesday: Modern Masters Weekend
This past weekend saw Magic the Gathering players meet up yet again to celebrate Modern Masters. As the new set was recently released, this big weekend was to celebrate it as well as host a series of tournaments all over the globe. Here are some fun facts from the weekend:
- An estimated 5,000 fans played in Grand Prix Chiba, Japan; another 5,000 in Grand Prix Utrecht, Netherlands; and an estimated 11,000 played in Grand Prix Las Vegas.
- The weekend included many cosplayers, four weddings, and tournaments as large as 3,800 players.
- Over the course of the weekend more than 40,000 main event matches and thousands of side events were played, over 90,000 packs of cards were opened, and countless spells were cast.
- An estimated 1,000,000 fans watched coverage of the events across English, Japanese, and Chinese language video streams, and the events generated more than 21,000 tweets.
There was also a great result from Grand Prix Utrecht where thirty six hundred players opened over twenty one thousand packs resulting in a total of three hundred and twenty four thousand cards. Try stuffing all of those into your collection. On top of this we have a winner of the GP after two days of competition. The winner was Davide Vergoni who ran a multi-coloured deck from the Modern Masters set in the limited format. He now gets to go home with his share of the seventy thousand dollar prize pool.
A great weekend indeed for any Magic the Gathering fans out there. Did you join in any of the Modern Masters festivities? Let us know what you thought of the event in the comments.
