The Town of Light is a horror game about the tale of a teenage girl who is suffering from mental illness inside the walls of a mental asylum. In the Town of Light, the characters are fictional while the story is meant to be based on true events from the 1930’s and 1940’s. Renee who is the protagonist in the game has a dark backstory starting from blackouts to strange voices in her head, all stemming from the horror of sexual assault.

Control of Renee happens after the asylum has been abandoned and become a creepy relic of the past. Your time in control is spending a lot of time exploring the derelict place trying to piece together what happened to her while she was there. While the story is about the struggles of mental illness it does not really do all that a good job.

Following Renee’s story is an interesting one with the twists and turns you face recalling memories from old journal pages and medical records. Outside this bigger parts of the story are presented in beautiful hand-drawn cutscenes such as the doctors abusing her. The only problem with this is because of the face The Town of Light sometimes feels like a simulator to walk rather than a game.

While the area to explore the hospital is large and there are plenty of rooms to go into the repetitive and boring environments start to drain on you. This translates into walking down the same looking corridors, to the same looking rooms filled with the similar looking bits trying to find journal pages or records. There is a point in the later stages of the game that you venture outside of the asylum but even then the change of scenery is not that refreshing.

There’s at one point in the game when you are outside you are thrown into a labyrinth to which you need to walk some more around a repetitive location. Now knowing if there is an objective, I was taken out and placed back into the asylum without any reason or story to why and what I was even meant to be doing.

The Town of Light could have been a much better game as the hand-drawn cutscenes are beautifully unique to tell the sad story of a girl who is being tortured by her own mind. Cutscenes aside, it is mainly let down by the fact the actual gameplay is just not exciting and too repetitive around the same environment. The bad outweighs the little bits of good inside story and artwork which is a shame I could see the potential.

The Town of Light has some beautiful artwork and interesting story moments let down by the fact the game consists of just walking, picking up notes and more walking.
