Have you ever felt the rush of a glorious charge as you destroy the enemy forces with overwhelming numbers? Or sensed victory as you wield the power of the gods to smite the last of their army? Well, if you haven’t before, then now you can. Take control of Heroic armies and Strive to be more with the Magic: The Gathering Mortals of Myth Intro Pack.

Let the armies march on!
Let the armies march on!

Mortals of Myth is a White and Green introduction deck that contains cards that revolve around the Heroic and Strive mechanics. The main win condition of the deck is to spawn an army of relatively low cost creatures, then make them bigger using instants and sorceries. By combining the previous mentioned mechanics, your army could double in strength and hit twice as hard at a moment’s notice. So rally the troops and prepare to charge.

The main force in this deck are early-to-mid game creatures. They allow you to put the pressure on quickly, right from turn one, to potentially overwhelm your opponent. Creatures such as Lagonna-Band Trailblazer, Vanguard of Brimaz, and Oreskos Swiftclaw allow you to initiate early skirmishes. As reinforcements become available, they can team up with the Phalanx Leader and activate as many creature buffing instants and sorceries as you can afford, and watch the Heroic triggers go wild when you target them. With Phalanx Leader, whenever you target him with said spells he will put a +1/+1 counter on all creatures you control, making a small threat into a big one very quickly.

If you haven’t beaten your opponent by the late game, there are some tactics to employ that can seal the deal. Creatures such as the 5/6 Quarry Colossus that dispatch a creature back to its owners library, and the 3/4 Pheres-Band Thunderhoof which obtains two +1/+1 counters for its heroic ability. Deploy them at the right time and back those up with the right troops and spells and it can be game over.

15 Spells

  • 2 Ajani’s Presence
  • 2 Banishing Light
  • 2 Colossal Heroics
  • 1 Consign to Dust
  • 1 Font of Vigor
  • 1 Nature’s Panoply
  • 2 Oppressive Rays
  • 1 Phalanx Formation
  • 1 Raised by Wolves
  • 1 Solidarity of Heroes
  • 1 Spear of Heliod

To reinforce your army of heroes and allow them to strive for greatness, this deck’s spell line up contains a plethora of creature targeting buffs. This is perfect to combine with the creatures that grant positive effects when targeted. But that’s not all. By paying that little bit extra, the spells that have Strive allow you to target even more creatures which can cascade into an almighty charge of unstoppable killing machines. Spells such as Ajani’s Presence and Solidarity of Heroes can grant +1/+1 counters to your army for a relatively low cost, and allow you to get over previously insurmountable odds.

Other spells that can assist in your campaign for dominance are Banishing Light and Oppressive Rays. These two spells can dispatch any nonland permanent that may be causing you trouble. To top it off, the legendary artefact Spear of Heliod grants +1/+1 to all of your creatures, but you can also tap it to destroy a creature that dealt damage to you that turn. Cast it as early as possible for ultimate control.

Charge the enemy from the sky and do it twice for good measure!

Other key cards at your disposal in this intro pack are Dawnbringer Charioteers, the cover card of the box, and Phalanx Formation. Now the charioteers don’t look much being a 2/4 for four mana. However, the fact that it is flying and has life link as well as being Heroic makes up for that. If you target it with Ajani’s Presence it becomes a 4/6 that can live to fight another day, and you will most like gain life because of it. Combine it with Phalanx Formation and you have a 3/5 double attacking life link flyer for the turn. Now that is terrifying.

In conclusion, Mortals of Myth intro deck contains the basis for a rush Heroic strategy. It can setup early on and keep the pressure on indefinitely throughout the match. However, it can be slowed down or even stopped by big creatures and removal spells quite easily. By destroying key creatures like Phalanx Leader, it can heavily hamper your efforts to win and in some cases lose you the game if you haven’t got an Ajani’s Presence in hand. This does allow for improvement and personal flavour to be added to the deck. More protection and even a third colour can help out, but overall, I would say that this deck is great for your first steps into the realms of Magic and possesses great potential and power.
