If you have ever been to a party in your lifetime, chances are you will have come across the activity known as the conga line. If you do need an explanation, a conga line is when a group of people dance in a line around a room to a piece of music. Although there have been many types of rhythm action games over the years, very few have centred around the conga line until the arrival of Conga Master, which was originally developed during one of the highly popular Ludlum Dare games jam events. The expanded version of the game arrived on PC earlier this year, and has now arrived on home consoles courtesy of its publisher Rising Star Games.

Conga Master Party for the Nintendo Switch is a direct port of this musical themed action game, despite the addition of an extra word into the title. This isn’t a problem by any means, as quite a few games have altered their names when changing from one platform to another. The aim of each stage is choose your main character from a diverse cast filled with men and women with different clothing and abilities. As their chosen character automatically moves across the dance floor, the player can change the angle and direction of their movement by using only the shoulder buttons, as long as they have the motivation to proceed. These simple controls have been tuned to perfection in game, but it can sometimes be a little loose during the in game menus where the player must rotate a dial to access their choices.

During the story mode, each of the dancers which can join your line are organised into four categories. Whether they think you are smartly dressed, romantic, cool or creative, each additional dancer briefly increases your motivation, and when you have reached a set amount of dancers from each category, the level exit is opened. In the Endless mode, the player does not have any set goals, so it is a matter of increasing your score for bragging rights. The soundtrack of Conga Master Party is a vibrant mixture of various chip tune tracks, which perfectly fit the theme of the game. The sound effects and voice clips are well recorded, and the subtle reference to a recently revived feline hero will certainly raise a few smiles among the gaming community.

Like in real life, the virtual characters are faced with obstacles which stand in their way, and benefits can be earned as you bring on the boogie. One of these possible hindrances are the pigs which are moving around every level. If you add one of these animals to your conga line, they take a fair chunk out of your motivation.  One of the best mechanics in each stage is the ability to enter new areas once your conga line has become long enough. These bonus locations include a larger amount of potential people to add to your entourage, as well as the higher chance of discovering a power up to increase your speed or motivation, although it is possible to discover them in the usual areas as well.

At the end of each Story Mode level, a bonus game will allow you to earn extra points by making sure your dancers evade the UFO that is trying to abduct them. This fast paced section is a fun way to break up the dancing themed gameplay. If you have found bonus tokens in either the regular or bonus stages, you are able to spin a roulette wheel to earn a power up for the next level, or you may unlock a new character to use in any game mode. It is great to see a game going back to the traditional method of unlocking content, instead of taking the easy way out and providing micro transactions or DLC to access additional material.

The various multiplayer options allow you to use practically every controller combination offered by the Switch, such as using a JoyCon for each player, using a Pro Controller or simply using the default two JoyCon control scheme offered the console. Each of the different modes for multiplayer are a joy to play, especially the 1-2 Conga option which allows you to steal dancers if you beat their leader at a game of Rock Paper Scissors.

Overall, Conga Master Party is an entertaining party game that is certainly worth the price of admission. Its addictive gameplay, along with the charming graphics and addictive soundtrack ensure that this will be a party favourite, as well as a guilty pleasure when you are looking to fill a rainy afternoon by dancing with yourself.
