Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay(WFRP) originally came out over 30 years ago with the 1st edition. It is now in the hands of the very talented and critically acclaimed Cubicle 7 Entertainment. They also publish titles for Warhammer 40k, Warhammer Age of Sigmar, Doctor Who, as well as Lone Wolf. Now on it’s 4th edition, it keeps the adventuring going.

The grim, dark setting of WFRP is in The Old World and the Empire of Emperor Karl Franz. The Empire spans far and wide with natural protection from the seas in the North and mountains to the South. It stands as candle of hope against the dark winds of corruption. Originally founded by Sigmar, a mortal who ascended to godhood, the people hang on to his influence amongst the sea of perils and suffering.

The land is slowly drowning in corruption and heresy. Only coin and blade can give you a fighting chance to see the next day. With dark gods promising change on the horizon for those who wish to see it and the counts of great provinces looking to claim more power, the wick of The Empire could be snuffed sooner rather than later.

You are less a hero than another soul wading through the endless tide. Create an alter ego from swashbuckling humans, berserking dwarves, to magic channelling elves and let the 10 sided dice decide your fate. May it be for coin, the thrill, or to survive the chaos for just another day. You are in the same boat as everyone else. Which way will you steer?

This grand campaign called Enemy Within is split into 5 volumes. You will gather your humble party in Volume 1: Enemy in the Shadows and adventure your way through The Empire claiming coin and glory… or your grim death. Each decision you make as a party can effect the fate of The Empire concluding in Volume 5: Empire in Ruins. You will need to honed your skills and talents, update your equipment, and co-ordinate as a team to best more and more perilous foes and situations.

Running along side each of the volumes are the Companion supplements. Each volume goes into great detail with regards to the setting, towns, interactable characters, questlines, and storyline elements. The companion supplements takes this a step further and provides oodles more resources to further cement your enjoyment and emersion in such a grim setting. Each play through can and will be different with more locations, situations, quests, and lore to uncover. It serves to enhance and expand upon an already exquisite adventure.

In the latest addition, Empire in Ruins Companion, it expands on locations found in the related module, provides additional quest lines, depth for NPCs and lore, as well as a plethora of rewards for undertaking all this additional content. When combined with the relevant volume it can create far greater emersion and scale for the players to enjoy. It will give more options to explore whilst also rewarding them for doing so… if they survive.

All in all, the Empire in Ruins Companion contains 12 new chapters across 118 pages for you to make the dice go clickerty clack. It is jam packed with new plot lines, characters to interact with, and quests to complete. With over 100+ additions to your adventures, there is sure to be many more hours of enjoyment to be had with this supplement!

All in all, the Empire in Ruins Companion is a great addition to any adventure in WFRP. It is recommended to couple this with the Empire in Ruins adventure to fully take advantage of the setting and current affairs of the game. But, regardless, this supplement is amazing! The Volume 5 adventure is 200 pages of rich, enjoyable journeys through a wavering empire. With an additional 118 pages from the companion, each encounter is even more fulfilling and every step is a memorable one.

Would I get this? Definitely! If you already enjoy the grim dark genre of fantasy roleplaying games then there is no reason why you shouldn’t delve into WFRP. If you are already there then adventuring through the Enemy Within campaign is one you will not regret. There is coin to be made, swords to be drawn, spells to be weaved, and glory to be had. Oh, and a little thing of an empire to save. Using the companion supplement takes this to an even greater level. So, if you are able definitely give this your attention! It’s a 10/10 for perilous content of epic emersion. A benchmark of roleplaying for sure!
