Nintendo may have not had the best year in 2013 with many fans giving up on the company due to its lack of games, thus resulting in poor sales and negative feedback. This year however could be a different story. Nintendo actually have a good set of games coming out in 2014 and this is before any big announcements the company could be planning. Without further ado, these are the reasons why you should keep an eye on Nintendo in 2014.

Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

Combining addictive puzzle solving and intense courtroom action; this 3DS title from Capcom and Level-5 is sure to delight fans of both game series. Featuring fully animated and voice acted cutscenes, combined with a strange setting with anime style aesthetics; this new world is just waiting to be explored. Solve challenging puzzles and defend a young girl in court as you seek out the truth of t you have a must own 3DS game, and that is even before the 12 content filled episodes worth of DLC.

Watch out for the game on March 28th, 2014.

Yoshi’s New Island

This game is just so adorable. The Yoshi’s Island series has always maintained a high standard of enjoyable platforming; but it’s the crayon like aesthetics coupled with a frustratingly cute soundtrack that makes you just want to smile the entire time while playing it, and why not? I had the pleasure of playing this 3DS title at Gamescom 2013 and it was one of my highlights of the trip; fans of the series do not fret, the green dino is back and he is better than ever.

Make sure to check it out from March 14th, 2014.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U

While I am sure you all saw this coming, the competitive four player fighting game from Nintendo is back and bigger than ever now spilling over the 3DS as well as the Wii U. Featuring all your favorite Nintendo characters, and some impressive new additions, this Smash Bros is set to be a must own from both platforms. Why both?  There is no cross platform play, which is a shame, but the character customisations can be transferred between both games and both titles have been designed with extras that complement that’s specific version exclusively. Also, I don’t think a Nintendo fan alive would not want Smash Bros on a Handheld!

Hyrule Warriors (tentative title)

As with most people, when I first saw this game I didn’t know what to make of it, Dynasty Warriors crossed with Zelda? Surely that won’t be that good. But after thinking about it, this actually has a lot of potential. The Zelda universe is filled with interesting characters and enemies but also has an established and well understood setting. This means the transition to another genre would in fact be rather simple and, if done well, could become a good game. And as everyone knows about Nintendo, something they do well is quality. Couple this with the knowledge that long-time Zelda dev Eiji Aonuma is on the production team; and then we can have faith in this game and definitely get excited for it.

X (tentative title)

Xenoblade Chronicles for the Wii was one of the best RPG’s I have had the pleasure playing in a long time. So you can imagine my absolute delight when it was revealed during E3, 2013, that Monolith Soft are not only making a new RPG for the Wii U, but it would be focusing on a creating large open world with seamless exploration and feature mecha for the player to pilot for travel and combat purposes. Throw in some impressive visuals for the trailer and how could anyone not be excited for this game?

Say what you will about Nintendo, this year is looking amazing and will hopefully show that while Nintendo is down right now, they certainly are not out.
