Yuji Naka is known as the “Father of Sonic the Hedgehog”, as such he was the former head of Sonic Team and the lead programmer of the series for a short while as well. After leaving Sega he gave up this title and formed his own studio, Prope, and started working on some smaller titles for phones etc. But this is set to change as it seems now Prope is ready to enter the new generation of gaming as they are now recruiting workers to work on next gen platforms (PS4 and Xbox One). According to the recruitment page, the game is most likely going to be a social 2D game but still, 2D can still work well in the next gen.
