Just like in the mainline Pokémon RPG’s, encountering a wild Pokémon in Pokémon Go can take a few seconds to several minutes. One of the best ways to increase your chances of finding one of the elusive creatures is to use Incense.

These items can be bought from the Shop using Pokécoins, or obtained from levelling up or using spinning the symbol at a PokéStop.

Once activated from the Items menu, a single use of Incense lasts for thirty minutes and will increase the chances of encountering a Pokémon by approximately fifty percent.

The best place to use Incense is nearby to PokéStops and Gyms, as the higher chance of encountering wild Pokemon will stack with the usual increased encounter rate at these locations. As well as a higher chance of finding more common species like Rattata and Caterpie, Incense will increase the oppurtunity for finding rarer Pokemon such as Pidgeotto and Furret.
