First Contact is the first quest you’ll pretty much get in Fallout 76 and is part of the main quest line.

This guide is a walkthrough of the quest and will take you through the steps needed to complete it and the stuff you can find out as you progress.

First Contact Walkthrough

First Contact begins as you leave Vault 76 and will task you with heading down the stairs outside the vault to find Pennington.

Go down the stairs to the left of Pennington to find a Responders Corpse and loot it to get a machete, pre-war money and Orders from Maria Chavez. You’ll then want to head into your Pip-Boy and equip the machete and can go down to the bottom of the stairs, on your way down you might be attacked by some Liberator MK 0s. They can be a little annoying as they shoot laser-based attacks and are small but you should be able to kill them off pretty quickly with your new weapon.

From there continue to follow the marker from the quest on your map and you’ll go to the Isolated Cabin but there is nothing in here from the quest so you can move on or go and search it. Be careful though as you might come across a pack of Vicious Mongrels but your machete can take care of them as long as you take them on one at a time.

Further on head past the cabin in the woods through the forest and continue towards your quest marker until you reach the Overseer’s Camp. Once there you can listen to the Overseer’s Log and your objective will update and you will need to search for the Overseer om the Flatwoods.

To get to Flatwoods you need to go back out of camp and head left and follow the road down and you’ll reach Flatwoods. Be careful on your way down the road though as you’ll most likely bump into some enemies like The Scorched, Vicious Mongrals and some others.

You’ll then head to the Command Post and enter it heading right and you’ll find an Overseer’s Cache including the Overseer’s Log – Flatwoods and listen to it to update your objective.

Finally, you’ll need to register as a Volunteer which allows you to take on more quests. You can do this by leaving the command post and heading over the road to the volunteer building which should be marked on with a quest marker. Inside will be a number of terminals on the back wall and you can access them and select [Volunteers: Register Here] on the screen and you’ll finish the quest.
