Anime fans and gamer fans would have probably heard of Sword Art Online and maybe Accel World, two of the most popular virtual MMO titles in the anime sphere. Bandai Namco has published the joining of the two worlds from author Reki Kawahara. 99% of anime goers would have most likely heard of SAO but Accel World might need some explaining.

Accel World is another VR MMO type anime that sets place in the future much like Sword Art Online’s world. In the world, people are equipped with Neuro-Linkers which is a special wearable collar which can do both Augmented and Virtual Reality. Brain Burst is an app that creates an AR and VR world for the fighting game in different environments using avatars which are created based on the inner personality of the user. Success in the virtual world collects points which can then be used for time-slowing superpowers in the real world.

Sword Art Online has made the better anime to game translation with many titles being pretty solid in their gameplay and story. We have not tried the Japanese titles of Accel World that have come out but they have not seemed to do as well.

The story of the game has been an addition to SAO: Lost Song with the centre of the narrative being based around Kirito and Asana trying to rescue their AI daughter Yui and this causes them to have to join their session with Accel World. This makes the cast of both shows interact but their impact on the story really does depend on how much you know and like Sword Art Online.

The characters of Accel World, for this reason, do have to spend time explaining their own show to the audience. This makes sense, in theory, technically it could be seen as a Sword Art Online game but with a tie into Accel World, the real reason seems to stem from one game being better known than the other. Even so, the story is one of the most enjoyable parts of the game for someone who has watched both shows. Watching characters interact and bounce off each other is worth it for fans of each series.

Sword Art Online title though it is really, with the guide of a joint title. The combat is the same as you would find in Sword Art Online: Lost Song with the same graphics, core mechanics and even the same enemy assets. The only difference is you have the Accel World characters thrown in with them firing skills and flying into aerial combat. To match the theme of SAO but to stay in line with the world of Accel World, their Duel Avatar have special abilities instead of weapons due to Dual Avatars a lot of the time being their weapon like Black Lotus. Other powers include rocket boosters and summons to spawn a mecha. Unlike the SAO characters though, they have given up their ability to fly (only one character can actually in Accel World).

Even with the changes though, Accel World characters don’t fit in that well with the world of Sword Art Online to make them fun to play. As the maps are massive, not being able to fly can become a hindrance and although you can jump far this does not help if you’re facing off against a flying enemy.

Overall, Accel World vs Sword Art Online: Millennium Twilight means to try well and on paper sounds like a great game but what makes both shows interesting make them individually great and don’t merge that well together. If you are a fan of both shows and have yet to try Lost Song, you will probably like it but non-JRPG gamers will not really enjoy the title.

Accel World vs Sword Art Online: Millennium Twilight means well to combine two awesome MMO based shows into an actual RPG but they are just too different to call it an outstanding success. There are good bits in the game but they are outweighed by the bad, with only true fans going to enjoy this one.
