HARDWARE REVIEW

Adata XPG Dazzle 16GB DDR4-2400 Dual-Channel Memory Kit Review

by Luke Walsh, January 16th, 2017

ADATA have been in the ram game for sometime and have brought out a range of different sticks for a variety of budgets, rigs and needs. The Adata XPG Dazzle 16GB DDR4-2400 dual channel ram kits are evenly priced on the market for performance vs cost. Gamers who are venturing away from DDR3 territory into DDR4 could quite easily consider these as potential upgrades for their new build.

First up packaging, usually the XPG Dazzle 16GB DDR4 ram would come in some shiny packaging with your usual specifications on the box. As we were sent just the sticks, the did not come in anything fancy but luckily it’s not the box that we are testing. The size and design have changed slightly from their other products which took up more room with its triangular shape, opting for a similar design but taking away the peak in the middle has made it take up less room.

We were supplied with two sticks of AX4U2400W8G16-BRD 8GB ADATA DDR4 ram which has timings of 16-16-16. It is worth mentioning that the AX4U2400W8G16-DRD are the exact same sticks of ram but just come in a pair. We received a pair of sticks but the model numbers meant for retail they were for individual packaging. This would not affect your build if you had the same as us and decided to get two separate sticks as opposed to the dual kit. Of course there are arguments out there it is better to pairs but that decision is ultimately up to you.

XPG Dazzle as the name suggests is LED lit, allowing you to showcase the ram if you have a windowed PC case. Something that was popular way back when but is slowly making another comeback with more towers being built again with windows on the side to show off your great cable management abilities. It is worth noting though unlike a lot of gaming peripherals, the Dazzle ram sticks only illuminate in one colour, red coming on and off with a breathing pattern.

Adata XPG Dazzle 16GB DDR4-2400 Benchmarks

In the test we used our test rig which consists of a i5 7600k, Gigabyte Z270x ATX Motherboard ATX Motherboard, an MSi GTX 970 Nvidia graphics card with a Corsair CX 750w power supply. Inside we installed the 16GB DDR4-2400 units and delved into the BIOS to see the XMP profile.

There was only one profile available “XMP Profile 1: 2400MHz @ 16-16-39 2T @ 1.2v” which was the first and only profile tested. For comparison,  they were crossed tested the ram with Kingston HyperX Fury with a profile of 2400MHz @ 13-14-14 @ 1.35V.

Conclusion

When compared to the Kingston Ram you can see there are small performance gains when using the Kingston out of the box compared to the ADATA XPG Dazzle set. There are also two profiles on the Kingston sticks but we tested only one profile which was closest to the Dazzle kit. The other profile on the Kingston ram did run at higher speeds and I thought the test would become unfair if we had also tested those against XPGs.

The ADATA DD4 kit does run on a lower voltage which also includes the red LEDS that give you that space age look if you have a windowed rig which is nice. It would of been more favourable though for ADATA if they had included some more profiles that are ready to go. When it comes to ram I think out of the box presets are important as not everyone wants to get their hands dirty and mess around with timings and voltages.

The sizing of the the Dazzle kit is not too high when compared to their previous models only measuring 41mm when they are inserted into the slots. Priced at £81 on Amazon, these could be a good alternative to the HyperX Savage which is £124 on Amazon but they do come with more profiles and lower latency timings if you are not comfortable overclocking.

ADATA have some nice looking sticks with performance that is comparable to sticks which can cost you £100+ but only going to set you back £80. For the price when looking at £££ vs performance there is a good trade off for the price you are getting compared to the power they will pump out. If you also want to make sure you rig glows in red and have the rest of the gear to back it up, the LEDs are a good “extra” but should not be the only reason to purchase.

If you are building your gaming PC for the first time or looking to upgrade and old rig and want some solid ram at a price that is not going to break the bank, I can see why these would definitely be appealing to some gamers.

The Adata XPG Dazzle 16GB DDR4-2400 Dual-Channel Memory Kit is a great set for a first time gaming rig enthusiasts or someone looking to upgrade. It is let down by only having one XMP profile and the latencies could be better but for £80 it is a balanced trade-off.
