Uncharted is still possibly one of the greatest game series of all time, yeah I said it. I absolutely love all 4 titles Naughty Dog has produced for this series and in my humble opinion, the fun starts from the moment you pop the disc into your PlayStation console.

Uncharted knew what it wanted to be, a cinematic gaming experience about adventure, treasure hunting, and humorous one-liners, and Nate’s theme sums that up perfectly. It’s a powerful theme that immediately makes you feel like you are about to step into an adventure on an epic scale.

I was incredibly late to the Metal Gear craze; I didn’t start until a year before the release of Phantom Pain. I took one marvellous summer and played catch-up on the entire series, one game in particular sticks out in my mind; Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.

Whilst the previous title took place in present day and despite keeping the cheesy Metal Gear vibe, was focusing on far more serious tones, which made Metal Gear Solid 3 feel like an incredibly welcome change.

The change started with the theme song, the games have always had Hollywood-styled intro sequences like ones you would find in your favourite Brosnan-era Bond films, but Snake Eater is (to me) the best James Bond theme ever, which makes the beginning of Snake Eater even better. It also helps that it is the best Metal Gear title.

Isn’t it obvious that there would be a Zelda title in this list, it is no secret that I am a ginormous fan of the Legend of Zelda series, that and the Zelda soundtracks are always done by Koji Kondo, who pretty much made the soundtrack to any Nintendo fans’ childhood.

I could have chosen any of the Zelda titles, I was very tempted to jump to my personal favourite entry; The Wind Waker, but opted for the marmite Wii title; Skyward Sword.

Skyward Sword was the first Zelda title to use a fully orchestrated soundtrack rather than the usual electronic-MIDI soundtrack, and it seemed like Mr Kondo had no trouble making the transition, his work really shines in the main theme of the title; The Ballad of the Goddess, a really powerful track that would make anyone in the mood for a fantastic Nintendo adventure.

Another Naughty Dog track? Perhaps I just can’t help myself, but I was a huge fan of this title upon its initial release and one of the things that made me so hooked was the Spanish-guitar soundtrack by Gustavo Santaola.

Technically Last of Us’ main theme doesn’t play on the title screen of the game, instead that is left void of soundtrack which in itself makes a tonal impact, but when the game gets going and the tension gets high, we are cut out of the world of the Last of Us, and introduced to the music that combines it. If you haven’t played the Last of Us yet, do so, but never play it on mute, otherwise you could cut your experience in half.

I know, this is a very different title from the rest, but hear me out.

Far Cry 3 may be the best Far Cry title in the series, but that’s not saying much, it’s a pretty average open-world title. The music makes it oh so much better, the psychedelic, low orchestra tones of its soundtrack makes Far Cry 3 stand out in the world of video game music, and it doesn’t get quite as much credit for that as it should.

I love the Little Big Planet titles, the art style of the knitted visuals, the cute imagery and what I can only call a world made from pure imagination. When you describe a game as such, you need a soundtrack to match. Luckily Little Big Planet provides, mainly in the music found in the first level of the first title, the gardens theme is always one that brings me so much joy whilst playing.

In fact, I won’t say any more, just listen and love.

Go and play Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 and then top it off with Sonic Heroes, because these titles have the best music in modern Sonic Game History. City Escape from Sonic Adventure 2 being of the best tracks, just stop taking things so seriously and enjoy the fun of Crush 40.
