A horror title that alters the scares and fears according to your heart beat and your ability to relax? Well Nevermind seems to be just that. In development with Erin Reynolds the adventure-horror title converts biological player responses into scares. Originally a college project, Reynolds has gradually expanded the project, increasing the amount of hostile situations and individual anxiety.
The title revolves around the player helping trauma patients by investigating their disturbing memories. You are then hooked up to heart monitors to track your response to development events. If you feel fear then the game reacts in kind, making the screen more shaky and confusing your power to navigate the environment.
“The more scared you are, the harder the game becomes,” says Renolds. “To complete the game, you have to get pretty good at learning how to manage your anxiety on the fly.”
In one instance a player will have to solve an anagram. If you being to stress out the screen fills up with milk meaning that your character will eventually drown. Naturally this is near the bottom of the variety of spooks and scares deployed against you.
“We wanted to create a sense of terror and mess with people’s brains” says Reynolds. “The tiniest tight feeling in your stomach is a very biological response and the game will acknowledge that.” Nevermind is also looking to be more than a game however with Reynold expecting to gain real life benefits from the title by allowing players to figure out ways to release stress in tense situations.
“It’s definitely worked for me,” she says. “We don’t want people to entirely lose their sense of stress–to just walk out in front of a speeding car feeling all ‘la dee da. But we haven’t seen anything to suggest a problem with that.” There as of yet has been no set release for Nevermind. Do you think this title is something that you would like to see released?
