Despite the PlayStation Network currently being down, Sony must be jumping for joy as the latest sales figures for the PlayStation 4 have been released. Over the Christmas period, Sony managed to shift an impressive 5.7 million units, bolstering their already mammoth sales toward the thirty-six million mark. Although I imagine that those 5.7 million newcomers must be fairly annoyed St the lack of online features currently available.
Its fairly common knowledge that the PlayStation 4 has trumped the Xbox One in sales. The last recorded sales figures from Microsoft show that as of November 2nd, a total of ten million units had been shipped, two third less than its lead competitor. This is probably most likely due to the fact that the Xbox One has sold poorly in Japan, much like previous generations of Xbox. Sony being native in Japan and having much stronger exclusives certainly hasn’t helped Microsoft either.
The sales figures sound good on paper, but when compared to Sony’s previous consoles, the PS4 sales still pale in comparison. At the current thirty-five million mark, this equates to just over a quarter of the what the PlayStation 2 managed to sell; an insane 155 million units worldwide.
