In a video and press release which has emerged today, Nintendo have announced that Rayquaza is the next pokemon to receive a mega evolution, alongside its legendary brothers. Not only does this confirm a new mega evolution, but also reveals that Rayquaza will be available to catch in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, despite previously being the mascot for Pokemon Emerald.
In the statement from Nintendo, it is revealed that Rayquaza’s evolution will be ‘remarkable’ compared to that of other pokemon due to its unique biology, and that the legendary may ‘somehow [be] connected with the mysteries of Mega Evolution.’ The press release went on to explain the kind of moves and abilities you can expect from Rayquaza.
“Rayquaza is an incredibly powerful Dragon- and Flying-type Pokémon, standing equal to Groudon and Kyogre. In battle, Mega Rayquaza’s skills are sure to wreak havoc on an opponent’s strategy with its Delta Stream Ability. Powerful moves like Rain Dance, Sunny Day, Sandstorm, and Hail will fail in the face of strong winds whipped up by Mega Rayquaza, whilst Abilities like Drizzle, Drought, Sand Stream, and Snow Warning will not even activate. In addition, moves of a type to which Flying-type Pokémon are usually susceptible will only deal normal damage.”
