New Tech Demo Shows Unreal Engine 4 Running in Firefox

Epic and Mozilla have teamed up to show a tech demonstration of the Unreal Engine 4 running in Firefox with no plug-ins.

With optimised JavaScript fresh from the Mozilla labs the browser has the capability of running UE4 at 67% of the engine’s native capacity and is expected to get even faster. They claim that other web applications currently perform at 40% of the engine’s capacity, adding that “specific optimizations currently present only in Firefox, ensure the most consistent and smooth experience.”

“We believe the Web has a crucial part to play in the future of game development and deployment.” – Tim Sweeney, Epic Games Founder and CEO

“Developers can run their games at near-native speeds, so they can approach the Web as they would any other platform.” – Brendan Eich, CTO and SVP of Engineering at Mozilla.

Mozilla are set to reveal more at the upcoming GDC event with more demonstrations and talks about their new technology.
