Sonic The Hedgehog Rebooted, Redesigned (Updated)

UPDATE: Sega released a trailer for the game, which shows off gameplay footage featuring Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy, platforming around multiple environments. The platforms are confirmed at the end – Nintendo Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS. The developer is revealed to be Big Red Button Entertainment, a studio formed in 2008 by (among others) ex-Naughty Dog staff, and not Sonic Team, who have traditionally developed main Sonic games.

Dada Rocks also tweeted another image, this time revealing the full cast:

Original Story: At a special event today in New York, SEGA officially announced the new look to the Sonic The Hedgehog series.

Sporting a new look, Sonic and friends will star in a new TV show called Sonic Boom. The new 3D animated cartoon is also to get a game based on the series. Although no platforms were announced yet, this is most likely the third exclusive Wii U game that SEGA had planned as part of contract with Nintendo, the first two of which were Sonic Lost World and Mario and Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympics.

Sonic Boom is a new cartoon that will run for 52 11-minute episodes aimed at boys aged 6-11. SEGA teased the new designs using silhouettes in a cryptic image last October.

The above image was tweeted by Twitter user Dada Rocks, who also says that other characters have undergone a redesign, including a new look for Tails in which he’s sporting a tool-belt.

This comes after months of speculation, and since SEGA earlier proclaimed that 2014 will be the year of Sonic, it appears that this is what they meant. The new designs are certain to generate a lot of discussion among Sonic’s fans. On a side note, it was ten years ago today that Sonic Heroes was released in the UK.
