EA Files Desert Strike Trademarks

Two new trademarks have been submitted to the United States Patent and Trademark Office by Electronic Arts.

EA’s trademarks are for Desert Strike, which could suggest a revival or re-release of the classic 1992 SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis game is on the way.

Desert Strike is a top-down shooter in which players pilot a helicopter and flies around isometric levels destroying buildings, rescuing hostages and capturing important targets. The game became a top-selling game for Electronic Arts, and received critical acclaim as well as some controversy due to its parallels to Iraq.

A new remake or revival would certainly be interesting, especially if it’s a big-budget AAA reboot as opposed to a HD upgrade of the original.

However, it could simply be EA protecting their IP, which is still a common practice among publishers. Whatever the case, it will be worth keeping an eye on this news as it develops.
