Over one full year since the completion of the kickstarter project, Anita Sarkessian has finally hit the landmark of being a third of the way through her planned 12 episode series. Tropes Vs Women In Video Games may still garner much critical attention, with people constantly discussing the topics she brings up, but her latest episode finally moves away from exploring the well-worn concept of the Damsel In Distress.
Ms. Male Character, the topic many critics are most likely about to rage over until the next episode, is the idea that some female characters are a copy of their male counterparts but with added sexist gender stereotypes. Opening with Ms. Pac-man, Sarkeesian makes a strong argument for how this idea could be construed at sexist.
Much like the rest of the series, Sarkeesian does state that video games did not start this idea. It raises some interesting issues, some well worth discussing as the medium moves forward into a new generation.
What do you think? Do you agree with Anita Sarkeesian’s latest series of criticisms, or do you not see an issue here? Let us know in the comments.
