Nintendo has shut down its photo/doodle sharing Swapnote service.
Swapnote previously allowed 3DS users to share photos and drawings using streetpass, but the service is no longer available after it was discovered that users were using it to send offensive material to each other.
“Nintendo has learned that some consumers, including minors, have been exchanging their friend codes on Internet bulletin boards and then using Swapnote (known as Nintendo Letter Box in other regions) to exchange offensive material.”
Due to the possibility of children seeing offensive images, Nintendo has taken steps to ensure the safety of its userbase, and there is no sign as to whether or not the app will become available again in the future.
