This year 3,900 fans of the Gadget Show voted on what they believed was the greatest gadget to be released this year. The 3D printer won out by a significant margin with nearly 31% of the overall vote. In second place was the iPhone’s main challenger, the Samsung Galaxy S4 which held 22% of the vote. This was followed by the Sony 4K OLED TV at 13% and the Xperia 2 at 10%.
Overall however Gaming outperformed various over gadgets in the top ten list with the Nvidia Project Shield (5%), Razer Blade Pro (3%) and Kickstarter console the Ouya (1%) holding the most positions on the board. Gadget Show presenter Jon Bentley voiced his opinion on these stats;
“It’s great to see 3D printing on top of the list. We’re yet to see the full impact it will have on our lives. But it looks set to be huge – on the way we make things and the things we make, both at home and in factories. We’re already seeing its potential in the aerospace, car and electronics industries – from making previously unimaginable components possible to keeping old planes flying by making once obsolete spare parts.”
“Consumer 3D printers are far from perfect, but it’s one of the most exciting areas of technology in the near future. It’ll be interesting to see what new software is created to help us make things ourselves and how we cope with new problems like the piracy of physical products.”
