Microsoft Will Have Dedicated Servers For All Xbox One Games

Senior Xbox director Albert Penello tweeted today that the upcoming console from Microsoft will feature dedicated servers for all of its games. This comes as part of Xbox Live Compute, which is Microsoft’s initiative to allow developers access to a wealth of cloud-based computational resources. Dedicated servers have already been confirmed for Call of Duty: Ghosts and Titanfall.

Microsoft said via the Xbox Wire that dedicated servers will allow for a more stable experience and more players playing. The post on Xbox Wire also explained a key feature of Compute:

“Xbox Live Compute can be utilized to persist game state so that your squad can live to fight another day without losing any progress. A great example of a game that is using Xbox Live Compute for their dedicated server multiplayer experience is “Titanfall.”

Xbox Live Compute will also allow developers to offload other facets of the game experience to the cloud, such as lighting and physics. Microsoft hopes that in the long run, this will help developers create better games, and of course it would all only be possible on the Xbox One. Xbox Live Compute is also purported to allow the dynamic updating of games. For example, new maps could be added without stopping to download an update.
