Final Fantasy VII Not Coming To Mobile Anytime Soon

Which Final Fantasy is best will be argued until the end of time, but it is hard to argue that Final Fantasy VII left the biggest stamp on the industry. From the iconic look of Cloud and Sephiroth, to the unforgettable death of Aeris, Square Enix burned themselves into the gaming collective consciousness. When Final Fantasy VI coming to mobile devices this winter, Square Director and Producer Takashi Tokita stated he hoped Final Fantasy VII was next. Sadly it won’t be that easy.

Tokita told Shacknews today that putting it onto mobiles would be harder than expected, stating:

“Unfortunately, it’s not that it’s not impossible for us to develop Final Fantasy 7 for mobile,” Tokita told Shacknews. “It’s that currently, space will be an issue. Phones won’t be able to contain the space it takes. It’s over a gigabyte. People are probably going to have to wait a few years.”

Final Fantasy VII goes well over the current Apple iOS game size limit of 2GB, so this is a case of the technology and rules developing before you can mourn the flower girl from the slums all over again.
