This may sound a little bit evil-corporation-esque, but Sony is apparently forcing UK game retailers to upgrade customers to more expensive bundles if they want a PS4 on release.
Pixelenemy reported that game retailer SimplyGames was emailing customers who pre-ordered the PS4 to tell them they needed to upgrade to a “Sony” bundles if they wanted a console at launch. These bundles were more expensive than the previous offers, running from between £400, to almost £500. This may seem like the retailers fault so far, trying to eek out a few more pennies this fall.
After further digging, Pixelenemy, once again, reported the problem went much deeper. Sony themselves are forcing this change upon retailers, with an anonymous retail source stating:
“PlayStation 4 pre-ordered stock is no longer just the standard machine for everyone, around half the stock are now bundles which we have to push as a forced option on customers. So instead of having 100% as solus (standalone console) with the option to upgrade, its now 50% Solus and 50% forced/by choice upgrades for the customer.”
“So its a play by play case for us, luckily most of our customers who have got a bundle wanted the extra games anyway. Its just a bit shitty that if they don’t they actually don’t have a choice.”
What this means is Sony’s decided to change what stock was being produced for the UK, and possibly beyond. Standalone consoles are being sent in smaller amounts, with retailers forced to upgrade customers to more expensive bundles to ensure they would have a console they already pre-ordered. While as stated this will most likely be fine for many gamers, this is a harsh move by Sony.
What do you think? Is Sony in the wrong, or should retailers have expected Sony to try and get more money for their latest piece of hardware? Let us know in the comments.
