Valve Releases Steam Machine Prototype Specs

On the Steam Universe community page, Valve has unveiled the hardware spec for the 300 prototypes that they’re sending out to select consumers.

Valve describes their first Steam Machine as a “high-end, performance box” and that it is “fully upgradeable”.

The company, who announced Steam Machines along with the Steam Controller last week, also offered more details about their plans for Steam Machines in general. The Steam machines will come in a variety of different forms, and will be made by a variety of companies. Valve also offers a disclaimer that “the hardware specs of each of those machines will differ, in many cases substantially, from our prototype.”

Valve issued the following hardware specifications for their first prototype.

Valve appear to be offering several different variations. For example, GPU and CPU can vary from box to box, from the Nvidia Titan to the GTX 660, and an Intel i7 to an i3. Valve is likely to release more information on its hardware ambitions in the future, as 2014 gets ever closer.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that we still have no idea what any of the Steam Machines will look like yet.
