EA Sports’ handheld entries into the FIFA series have been revealed today to be roster updates. Put simply this means that the underlying game, mechanics and engine have not changed – all that’s happened is that the game will include updated kits, players, leagues and teams. Since this has been going on for so long, technically this is the same game as was released for the PSVita and 3DS in 2011.
This information was confirmed for the 3DS side of things in a Nintendo Europe press release:
“FIFA 14 Legacy Edition delivers unmatched authenticity that reflects the current football season with updated kits and rosters but no updates to gameplay or game modes…..”
This has been happening for a number of years, and EA finally seem to have been caught out – in the interests of fairness they’re calling the game FIFA 14: Legacy Edition, making the fact that its simply an updated roster more clear.
While the current-gen and next-gen console versions of the game boasting significant upgrades to the gameplay experience and graphics, it begs the question as to why the handheld versions of the game didn’t receive the same amount of attention. What’s also of note is that the game is being sold – in the Nintendo eShop at least – for $40 in the US, which is full-price for a handheld title.
What do you think? Should it be sold at a cheaper price considering the lack of new gameplay features? Are EA getting away with it? Let us know in the comments below.
