Speaking at PAX Prime Chris Charla, portfolio director for digital games at Microsoft has told gaming site Joystiq that the ID@Xbox program will allow all payment models. This means that indie developers are free to make their games as free-to-play with micro-transaction titles or traditional buy for an upfront price title as before.
“On Xbox One, games that come through ID@Xbox are no different than any other game,” Chris Charla said. “They have full Gamerscore, full Achievements, can take advantage of SmartGlass, Kinect – if you can do it with an Xbox One game, you can do it with anything that comes through the ID@Xbox program. That’s like a fundamental tenet of the program.”
Announced at Gamescom, ID@Xbox allows indie developers to self-publish on Xbox One without incurring any fees from Microsoft. Developers with a proven track-record, such as having a game on Microsoft’s platform already, are given priority for registration through the service, though registration will mean that there will be no title update fees or certification requirements.
