Unity Technologies, creators of the Unity engine and development tools have announced a veritable feast of details for their upcoming 2013 Unity Awards which will take place during the company’s Unite 2013 conference in Vancouver, Canada.

The Unity Awards are designed to celebrate the Unity community, which is made up of over two million developers. The categories for this year’s awards include “Best Student Project, Best 3D Visual Experience, Best 2D Visual Experience, Best Gameplay, Best Non-game Project, Best VizSim Project, Technical Achievement, Community Choice, and the Golden Cube for best overall project.” There were around 375 entrants of which the winners were chosen by Unity Technologies employees aside from Community Choice, which will, strangely enough, be voted on by the community. The Unity Awards ceremony will take place on Thursday, August 29th during the Unite 2013 conference.

Sessions at this year’s conference will include talks from several Unity Technologies staff as well as development professionals from around the world, including members of Behaviour Games, Blackbird Interactive, Interactive Labs, Monkey Squad, Psyops, Threaks. Sponsors, who will be exhibiting their Unity related development tools, product, and hardware at the conference include……wait for it….take a deep breath…

“ARM, Autodesk, BlackBerry, Exit Games, Facebook, Inc., The Foundry, GameAnalytics, Immersion Corporation, Leonard3Do International, Microsoft, Mixamo and Allegorithmic, Nintendo, Nokia, NVIDIA, Oculus VR, Qualcomm, Reallusion, Side Effects Software, Simplygon, Sony, Unity Studios, and UnityVS.”

The Unite 2013 conference starts on Wednesday, August 28th with the keynotes speeches coming from David Helgason, Joachim Ante, and Lucas Meijer and a special guest keynote presentation from“space adventurer and gaming guru”  Richard Garriott de Cayeux. This guy is clearly living the dream when he gets to introduce himself as a space adventurer and gaming guru. Garriott is most famous for his creation of the highly successful Ultima series as well as the MMORPG Tabula Rasa. Garriot’s talk apparently will be centred around his vast experience in the industry, as well as his current KickStarter project Shroud of the Avatar.
