CD Projekt Red have always been very outspoken about how they feel about DRM. Marcin Iwinski, CEO of CD Projekt Red stated last year that “The truth is it does not work. It’s as simple as that.” This was during the time of the controversial Ubisoft DRM and online passes, but that didn’t deter the polish studio.
Now targeting the practice of DLC, or at least DLC of little value, Game Director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz told the Examiner that “We could sell extra content to gamers ‘down the road,’ but we don’t believe in that. We believe patches, fixes and additional content should be provided to gamers free of charge. Only something REALLY big, and something that will not make you feel ripped off, justifies a price tag.”
A brave stance in the new world of micro-transactions and cheap costume packs. A paid expansion of large piece of DLC along the lines of Red Dead Redeption: Undead Nightmare or Dark Souls: Artorias of the Abyss seems more to his taste. A new twist or fleshed area to expand on the full games strengths, not a quick cash in of ideas cut to squeeze a few more pennies from
Tomaszkiewicz went on to say “If we ever decide to charge you for something, we think you will appreciate what you get in return”. In the sometimes frugal mind of the gamer value can mean everything.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is out in 2014 on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
