3DS Sales Rise as the Handheld Overtakes Sales of PS3 and 360 in the UK

Nintendo’s 3DS sales have been steadily increasing week-by-week for the last 3 months to overtake sales of the sales of the home consoles. The spike in handheld sales being driven by the releases of hit Nintendo titles such as Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, causing the 3DS to reach a feat it hasn’t managed before in it’s lifespan.

The 3DS so far is the only console to have managed to sell more games this year than it had the year prior.

“Software sells hardware,” explains James Honeywell, head of consumer marketing at Nintendo UK to MCV.

“You must have heard that from us a lot. And the same can be said for Wii U as we move into peak season. With such a strong line-up of titles that are so critically acclaimed, it is just a perfect storm. It has made it the format of the moment.

“Sometimes 3DS, or handheld in general, suffers because people tend to focus on the home console market. But 3DS is really doing the numbers right now.”

With the awaited releases of Pokemon X and Y and Shin Megami Tensei IV in the future for the handheld do you think the 3DS will continue to sell well or not? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
