Miyamoto: HD Development costs were underestimated

It’s no surprise to anyone that Nintendo look to be a little on the back foot as of late. With the Playstation 4 and Xbox One closer than many people may care to think, the Wii U is losing time fast if it wants to establish itself as a solid next generation console. Last month the President of Nintendo Satoru Iwata said that he ‘Doesn’t much care what the competition are doing.’ But we have yet to see if that statement is supported overconfidence, or extreme arrogance.

In a Q&A with investors yesterday Senior Managing Director Shigeru Miyamoto explained that the delay to the Wii U’s software developments are due to high-definition game development and it’s high demand in the market. This was a popular complaint among publishers after the release of the Xbox 360 and PS3.

He went on to say:

When it comes to the scale of software development, Wii U with HD graphics requires about twice the human resources than before. Please allow me to explain that we may have underestimated the scale of this change and as a result, the overall software development took more time than originally anticipated just as we tried to polish the software at the completion phase of development. However, we are almost out of this phase, and we are also trying to create something unique utilizing an easier development approach called ‘Nintendo Web Framework

Could this mean that Nintendo are finally starting to try and catch up to their rival console developers that they have ‘not much cared about’ recently? Nintendo have certainly seemed to take the safer route as of recent years so them stepping up their game could certainly get the sweat running in team Sony and team Microsoft.

What do you think of Nintendo’s recent actions? Did you buy a Wii U or are you waiting for the other next gen consoles? Let us know in the comments below.
