For those who haven’t seen the 1970-80’s cult film series, Mad Max is set in a post-apocalyptic Australia. With oil and all energy supplies nearly completly run dry, the titular Max fights against roving gangs of S&M wearing bikers.

While not a family friendly series, it did gain a healthy cult following and became one of Australia’s best known film releases. The main character however wasn’t played by a native, but rather Mel Gibson. While born in America, he was raised in Sydney and played the role with a distinct Australian accent.

With Mad Max one of the reasons he became a well known actor, Max is kind of an iconic character. So why have Avalanche Studios decided to cast Max to have an American accent?

This has irked many Australian gamers, and those who love the series. With a representative from Avalanche stating “We wanted someone generic”, the people over at ausgamers have proposed a crazy alternative; give Max the accent of the country he was born and raised in as well as where the game is set.

Petitioning that Avalanche change the actor to have an Australian accent seems like a perfectly reasonable thing to ask. For a studio that wants to treat the source material with respect masking the characters nationality isn’t the right way to do it.
