Steam Introduces Subscription-Based Services Starting With Darkfall Unholy Wars

It is now possible to charge a monthly subscription fee through Steam. These fees will be managed through the Steam client. The first game to make use of these monthly fees through steam is the MMO, Darkfall Unholy Wars.

This new game, and its subscription, comes in a time where MMO subscription fees are greatly on the decline, with many MMO business models now looking towards the free-to-play plan. Valve have said that more subscription based games are also in the works.

Darkfall Unholy Wars is a game that recently got greenlight on Steam. It is one of the biggest games to game been greenlit and is developed by Adventurine. The game allows players to freely explore a seamless, zoneless, uninstanced open fantasy world.

What does everyone feel about a subscription based MMO being run and managed through Steam? Will it work with paid MMO’s on the decline, or is this the next big thing?
