Calling it Mass Effect 4 isn’t really fair or representative of the project, according to Bioware’s Community Manager Chris Priestly. And yet despite all of this lots of fans will still know it by this name (at least for the time being).
The next Mass Effect game won’t be set as a sequel to the original games. Priestly commented “We have already said that the Commander Shepard trilogy is over and that the next game will not feature him/her. This is the only detail you have on the game.”
Yanick Roy, director of Bioware Montreal, also discussed more thoroughly why you shouldn’t consider the next Mass Effect game a sequel:
“Mass Effect 4 would imply a certain linearity, a straight evolution of gameplay and story of the first three games. But because we are switching to a new engine and need to rebuild a bunch of game systems, we have an opportunity to rethink how we want these systems to be going forward instead of just inheriting them from the previous games. Story-wise, the arc of the first trilogy has also been concluded, and what we will do is tell a new story set in the Mass Effect universe.”
Notice how he said ‘the first trilogy’? Could there be another one in the works? He also added one very interesting line:
“That doesn’t mean that the events of the first three games and the choices you made won’t get recognised, but they likely won’t be what this new story will focus on.”
You can also expect to see the same alien races, technologies, the lore and history in the new game, since that’s what makes these games Mass Effect titles. Could this be some form of sequel instead?
While these details are quite small they do give an indication of where the game is going. VGU will keep you updated on all the news for it so keep checking back!
