Wii U Failed As A Worthy Successor To The Wii, Says Nintendo

The President of Nintendo, Satoru Iwata, has said in a financial results briefing that the Wii U has failed as a worthy successor to the Wii. Even the Wii is outselling it, and the forecast is looking bleak for Nintendo as its Wii U struggles in the marketplace.

According to Iwata, one of the best things about the Wii U is that it plays Wii games. He outlined noted several things in the report:

“…except for its backward compatibility with existing Wii software and accessories, we have so far failed to make propositions worthy of Wii U’s position as a successor to the Wii system.

Iwata goes on to explain that the Wii’s success is down the fact that Wii Sports and Wii fit were the console’s “defining titles”. Nintendo’s president then explains that the Wii U’s equivalent to Wii Sports and Wii Fit, the new titles Wii Fit U and Wii Sports Club, will help the sales of the machine, even though it took a long time to release these titles.

Of course, Iwata also cites the upcoming Super Mario 3D World as an important title this year, calling it “central pillar”, with Wii Party U and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games: Sochi 2014 as other important games this season. Next year, the company plans to release the very latest Super Smash Bros. game, and Donkey Kong Country Returns: Tropical Freeze.
