VGU Talks: The Nintendo World Championships Are A Joke
With a lot of interest around Nintendo’s plans for E3 2015, one of the biggest reveals from Nintendo of America was the return of the Nintendo World Championships. The announcement made a lot of gamers, me included, excited for its return. The possibility to prove to ourselves if we can be the ultimate Nintendo gamer.
But sadly, the big gaming company might have shot themselves in the foot with their announcements to the qualifiers locations. These sessions will be taking place in Best Buy locations scattered throughout the United States and that’s it. No European or even Asian tournaments to be held to collaborate at a later date. This means that the so called World Championships are only going to be based in the USA and nowhere else. Alienating the rest of the world from potentially entering and participating in this tournament, unless you can buy a ticket to the states just to visit a Best Buy and potentially lose.
In comparison to other successful world gaming tournaments, like the LCS for League of Legends, this is simply a joke. It feels rushed out of the doors by Nintendo of America just before E3 to generate buzz and a talking subject. To be a much better tournament that can feature the whole world, the US branch of the company should work together with their other locations to bring as many locations in as possible. Scatter the qualifiers over a year period to bring in the best of the best. Leading up to a massive tournament that can ge viewed by everyone around the world to see who is truly the very best.
The tournament is a great idea yes, but its execution feels and now looks very lack lustre. What are your thoughts on the World Tournament qualifiers? Let us know in the comments.
