VGU Talks: Micro-Transactions In Triple A Games
As more and more great titles from the high end of developers get released to us on all of our favourite platforms, one thing seems to be more and more common. The practice of micro-transactions in games is not old as many free-to-play titles on consoles, PC and handheld devices need them in order to earn a profit from their games. But as this seems to be the norm with these games, having them in Triple A titles still seems to be very daunting.
Recently there have been two big name titles to jump onto the micro-transaction band wagon. These being Konami’s Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and Bungie’s Destiny. MGSV is introducing the ‘FOB Insurance Service’ which allows the game to cover losses you may experience if your base is attacked by another player. Destiny however is introducing a vendor that will, at the moment, be selling the collector’s edition exclusive emotes for The Taken King that do not prevent playing with other players that so not own them.
My full thoughts are in the video above but I generally do not like micro-transactions in triple A games. Whether they may be useful, optional or darn right inappropriate, it just takes away from the development of the actual game as many man hours would have to be put towards making this system from the ground up. Will it go away any time soon? Hopefully so. But as long as there is a demand for this practice to be in these games, then things could be getting darker on the horizon.
What are your thoughts on games with micro-transactions? Do you approve or disapprove of the practice? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
