Ubisoft have begun to showcase their latest creation, Child of Light, through a series of behind the scenes videos on their youtube channel. The first entry in the Making-of series, released today, starts us off with gameplay and art style.
In this first episode, which you can watch above, creative director Patrick Plourde and writer Jeffery Yohalam explain that Child of Light is a coming of age story, presented as an interactive poem. The story begins when the Duke’s daughter, Aurora, awakes to find she is alone in a magical world called Lemuria. At first her only wish is to return to her father, but soon her journey becomes about far more than finding her way home. Over the course of her travels, Aurora will blossom from a little girl who wants to find her family, into a strong princess who will save the kingdom.
The game is presented as an interactive painting, powered by Ubisoft’s UbiArt Framework Engine, which was also used to create Rayman Origins and Legends. Using this engine the concept art becomes the game art, as the designs are simply cut up and brought to life. The style has been inspired by illustrators and artists of the 18th Century, such as John Bauer and George Rackham, who are famed for their elegant and whimsical designs.
Plourde also explained how he intended Child of Light to appeal to older, classic RPG fans, who may now have families of their own. It is for this reason that the game supports co-op, so that parents can share the fairytale-like experience and their love of games with their children.
Child of Light was only imagined by director Plourde just last year, but has developed quickly into a beautiful and promising game. For more information on Child of Light, be sure to stay tuned for updates as its release date draws ever near, on April 30th.
