Prime World Preview

prime world2

Recently it was a Beta Weekend for an upcoming RPG (Role Playing Game) and MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena), Prime World developed by the Russian based company, Nival. I managed to get hands on with the game and have a chance to see what it brings to the table. So let’s get ready to explore the vibrant world of Prime World.

Prime World first off allows you to log in straight through your email or your facebook account which is a nice little touch to the log in functions. As you log in for the first time you are given a choice as to which faction you wish to fight for. The Dokht Imperium are the mechanical nation and the Keepers of Ardonia are the more natural faction. The factions will give you the choice of heroes available to you as well as where you are positioned in the world.

The game itself then cuts itself off into two different forms, castle and hero management and combat. The management portion of the game has you participate in a Farmville style setting where you can place important resource generating buildings, such as mills and mines, and set them to gain resources over a period of time, average thirty minutes. Whilst this is occurring, you can then tinker with your heroes abilities, stats and loadouts before jumping to the gate and sending one out to do battle in PvE or PvP combat.

The combat itself plays like a lot of similar MOBA titles such as League of Legends or DotA 2 however there are some differences. The first major difference is the camera being locked on your character, which is a little bit annoying. You want to have the freedom to check the area around you to deal with combat in other lanes and see incoming threats. The next change is the amount of abilities and items you can have. Instead of using the QWERTY system like most MOBA’s it uses the number keys from 1 through 0. This takes a little getting used to but after a while you settle into the zone. Now as for purchasable items you are really restricted to just potions. Now some people might see this a s a bad option as there is a lack of item building for heroes in this game. However they have made the item build situation easier for new MOBA players to understand.

The new system is that you gain abilities that both give your heroes new powers and increased stats in an ability tree. To gain resources to unlock these abilities you gain ‘Prime’. You gain Prime constantly throughout the game, stopping the concern for last hitting opponents, and gain exceedingly more with monster kills, hero kills and destroying structures. After you have gained a certain amount of Prime, an ability will automatically become available above your Prime gauge. This means that you don’t need to take time out of combat to gain a new ability, but you still have the option of opening up the ability tree and seeing what you can and can’t acquire.

All the heroes generally feel different and have their own unique set of abilities, both passive and active. However when you face the opposite faction you start noticing that you are pretty much facing the opposite version of your roster of heroes. This is a little bit of a downer since they feel exactly the same with a few differences in design and vocals.

Overall the game was a blast to try out. With a few fixes and tweaks here and there the game could end up becoming a very good casual MOBA for gamers to enjoy.
