Nikkei Reports Nintendo to Stop Making The Wii U in 2016

UPDATE (23/3/16): Nintendo have stated that this is nothing but a rumour and that they plan to support the Wii U into “2016 and beyond”.

The Japanese financial newspaper Nikkei has reported that Nintendo plans to cease production on the Wii U console in 2016. More information on the subject comes from CEO of Kantan Games, Dr. Serkan Toto who tweeted about the report on his personal twitter earlier today.

Toto also revealed that according to the Nikkei that Nintendo has already stopped production on many accessories for the Wii U.

Despite being a fantastic system with a wide range of superb exclusives, sales for the Wii U have been sluggish to say the least. Despite the console being on the shelf since 2012, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have already managed to surpass it in sales.

This doesn’t reveal anything more about Nintendo’s new NX system, but it does say that Nintendo is already prepared to say goodbye to the failing Wii U system in order to move forward. Nintendo have spoken of plans to announce the NX later this year, this news simply fuels that fire.
