New Space Hulk Game Announced for 2013

Out of the blue a relatively unheard of studio in Denmark, Full Control ApS, has announced earlier today that they will be developing a new Space Hulk game for PC, Mac, and iOS arriving in 2013.

For those not familiar, Space Hulk was a tabletop board-game released by Games Workshop back in 1989 and is set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe (which Dawn of War I and II, and Space Marine are set in). The game takes place on derelict “Space Hulks” which are large collections of junk, dead star ships, and asteroids which are floating through the Imperium space. These hulks pose a potential threat to the imperium because they contain lost data and hostile enemies (genestealers). Fire teams are usually sent in on deadly missions to secure them, and players can take either role with the aim of destroying each other or completing missions turn by turn.

The board game was a great success for Games Workshop, and even spawned an Amiga/PC game of the same name in ’93.

Full Control also posted up a link to the main website for the new game, which boasts that Space Hulk’s main features will be:

  • Blood Angel terminator squad

  • Fearsome Genestealers with challenging AI

  • Thematic 3d environment

  • Single player campaign based on the “Sin of Damnation” hulk

  • New coop multiplayer levels against the Genestealer AI

  • Multiplayer head-to-head recreating the board game experience against a friend

  • Cross platform multiplayer between PC, Mac and iOS

  • Level editor with ability to share creations

  • Game expansions in the future as DLC

One of the great features of the original Space-Hulk board game was how dynamic levels could be created easily, and in a short time; so the addition of a level editor definitely makes the game sound promising. On top of this, they plan to add co-operative features to the game to bring it to a more modern platform.

Overall it seems that Full Control ApS are definitely well qualified at developing Turn Based Strategy titles; with three small ones already under their development belt. However, their mission statement might cause some controversy among more hardcore GW fans, they plan to deliver strategy games for what they have dubbed the “Soccer Dad” group (old school gamers with less time nowadays for gameplay).

Hopefully, some gameplay footage will be released soon showing Full Control’s potential when trusted with one of Games Workshop’s oldest (and most valued) franchises.
