Dark Souls III to Be the Final Chapter?

Us From Software junkies had a reason to celebrate yesterday as it was announced that Dark Souls III is official and heading for us in early 2016. Riding high on the success of Bloodborne, From Software aren’t showing any signs of slowing down and in keeping with their traditions, the trailer we got was dark, murky and vague. Exciting the enlightened and baffling others in the process.

But whilst our heads were still spinning from the promise of yet more blood, sweat and tears courtesy of the series’ addictive sadomasochistic approach to fun, there’s one little detail that seems to have slipped by many of us. A European press release for the game featured some words that will trouble some and relieve others. If they are to be believed, Dark Souls III will be the final chapter in the infamous series.

“The DARK SOULS brand became a phenomenon thanks to amazing work from our dear partners FromSoftware and our very own BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment teams”. said Herve Hoerdt, Vice President of Marketing & Digital at BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Europe. “But above all, we are blessed to have such a supportive and loving community, and we are happy to dedicate this final episode to them!”

So this could be it for the franchise, but murmurs of a sequel to Bloodborne mean that despite the Souls series being laid to rest, From Software have no intention of stopping their run of innovation. Nothing has been revealed yet in regards to Dark Souls III’s narrative or setting, but there’s a lot of hints in this trailer that we could be making a long-awaited trip back to Lordran. It’s a long shot, but we’re all itching to re-live those painful hours spent bashing our heads against the bricks walls of Undead Burg.
