SEGA announced that the remake of the beloved Mega Drive title Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse, will be available to download on September 4th, 2013.

The original Castle of Illusion was released in 1990 for the Mega Drive (or indeed, Genesis) and is a well-remembered and charming but challenging platformer. Considered a classic by many, the game spawned other successful “Illusion” titles for SEGA and Disney.

Now, 23 years later, the game has been re-imagined by Sega Studios Australia, with 3D graphics, updated music, voice acting and more. Players will traverse the familiar forest, toybox, and library settings with a new orchestrated version of the original’s soundtrack keeping them company, as well as new mechanics and areas not seen in the original. Players will also be able to choose which soundtrack – 16-bit or modern- to play in the background, which is a nice touch.

Players in Europe who pre-order the PS3 version of Castle of Illusion between August 21st and September 4th will receive the original Mega Drive game as a separate download once the game launches. The game will cost £9.99/€12.99/$14.99USD/1200 Microsoft Points.
