5 Games We’re Excited To Play At EGX 2014

With EGX London just under a month away, the hype is starting to creep back into our minds as we move closer to the most wonderful time of the gaming calendar. EGX gets bigger every time, and last year’s was the biggest on record. 2014 looks to be even bigger, so here’s a list of confirmed games we’re most excited to play at the event.

Alien: Isolation (Creative Assembly/SEGA)

Alien-Isolation-47

Could this be the best Alien game ever?

Alien: Isolation is the pant-wettingly scary 1st-person horror game that takes us into the world of the Alien movies once again, playing as Amanda Ripley, the daughter of Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley.

After last year’s disappointing Colonial Marines, Creative Assembly and SEGA seemed to have redeemed the Alien franchise with Isolation, based on what we’ve seen so far. An uncompromisingly scary vision coupled with the claustrophobic backdrop of the original 1979 movie; Alien: Isolation looks like it’ll be a horror experience to remember. The minimalist design makes us very interested to see what Creative Assembly can do with the unique setup.

The Evil Within (Tango Gameworks/Bethesda)

Third-person horror from the creator of Resident Evil 4? Yes please.

Announced way back in 2012, this horror game is cloer to release thna you might think, releasing in October. This means that demo shwon at EGX could be in a near-finished state.

Shinji Mikami’s The Evil Within promises to be the grand return of the survival horror master, who’s still revered for his work on Resident Evil 4 almost a decade ago. The third-person action horror looks to be filled with scenes designed to mess with the player’s head too, with many scenarios that seem as though they could be illusions for players to deal with.  We can’t wait to see which part of the game will be demoed at EGX, as we know it’ll probably be weird, wonderful and of course, utterly terrifying.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection (343 Industries/Microsoft)

Arguably the best Halo game is getting the long-awaited, highly sought-after remake treatment.

The chance to see Halo 2 Anniversary running on an Xbox One is easily the most tantalising aspect of the Master Chief Collection, which contains the four main Halo games, from the first trip to the ring-world right up to the most recent release, Halo 4. Microsoft are boasting a 1080p/60fps for all four games, and we can’t wait to see them in action.

We hope that there will be a multiplayer demo on the show floor, as the chance to run around on Halo 2’s multiplayer again is a very exciting prospect indeed. Hopefully we can get some cheap energy-sword kills while we’re at it.

Evolve (Turtle Rock Studios/2K Games)

Evolve-03

Are you a team player or a lone wolf? Evolve let’s you choose.

2K’s curious, asynchronous multiplayer affair has us intrigued. The unique 4-vs-1 design of the game makes us want to get a few rounds in. The game, which comes from the creators of the original Left 4 Dead series, casts players as either the monster or one of four hunters who must take it down. It will be cool to see what kind of tactics you can employ as the Monster, and it will be especially interesting to see how the game balances out during the matches.

Sunset Overdrive (Insomniac Games, Microsoft)

Fast and frenetic, and not a chest high wall in sight.

Insomniac Games’ latest shooter is the crazy, over-the-top Sunset Overdrive, which features plenty of fun-looking gameplay as you free-run, jump, glide and grind around Sunset City. The game looks to be a mash-up of platformer and shooter, which, after the painfully long rut of cover shooters we’ve been in since forever, is a welcome change. We hope we can get our hands on a nice chunk of the city that we can run around in, while running up walls and blowing up mutants with a fireworks gun. This looks to be a sleeper-hit exclusive for the Xbox One.

EGX 2014 looks like it’s going to be a another huge year, and with many games still unconfirmed, we can’t wait to head to the Expo at the end of September and get our hands on the games that will define the latter part of 2014 and beyond. As we get closer to the event, stay tuned for more updates and our upcoming piece on what games we’d like to see at the show that haven’t been confirmed yet.
